Well, it happened.  The Republicans, the Tea Baggers, the Neocons, and the GOP (your choice) took control, as predicted.  The Senate went Republican in last November's election, alright.  Danged if they didn't increase their majority in the House, too.  All the campaign bucks to demonize President Obama in the last few years finally took effect.  Nice work, guys.  Kudos to Karl Rove and the Koch Brothers.  Your dollars and best efforts worked.  In spades.  It was a wipeout.  The Democrats should have just saved their money and sat at home.  Long live the Koch brothers.  It looks like the money wins again.  So who wins?  Corporations, especially the war ones, the Military Industrial Complex.  So we better get our borrowing and spending shoes on again.

By the time this piece goes to press, America, for better or worse, will have a newly elected majority of Republicans sitting in the US Senate.  Or at least that’s what the smart money, the boys in the back room say about how this 2014 off-year election will go down.  So how do they know?  Well there are several touchstones to tell us.  Litmus paper tests to tell which way the wind will blow, you know?  Polls they’re called.  The public will.  The voters’ choice.  And why not?  Ain’t that what democracy’s all about?

A few mornings ago, Dennis called me from Billings to tell me that a Texas high court had overturned Tom DeLay’s convictions of money laundering and other high crimes.  Dennis was an old friend who liked to talk irony when it came to government considerations and travesties.

“Tom Delay Gets Excused from his Crimes and Takes a Walk,” he said, “Sound familiar?”

Remember when Liberal was a fine word with no hate or venom attached to its use?  I asked a friend the other day if he could remember when “Liberal” was something proudly attached to Baccalaureate Sheepskins?  He said sure, but could not remember when it all happened and caused the English language to adopt a new word with new meaning.  I confess that every time I see my own sheepskin on the wall I am a bit secretive and embarrassed to admit that I have a Bachelor of Arts degree.  I used to be proud of that word Liberal attached to the document, but it is not a big thing, really.

First, try to remember the basics you learned in high school sciences like physics, chemistry, biology, and geology, and try to equate those times  with today.  Take global warming.  In 2014 we have scientists and counter-scientists (Have Gun Will Travel hired out by those who wish to defunct the reality of manmade global warming).  The real scientists are in consensus that global warming is caused by Nature and Man alike.  But the pseudo-scientists hired by smokestack industries debunk the real scientists when it comes to holding ourselves accountable for warming up the planet and causing terrible consequences like melting ice caps and glaciers...
